Situated in north-west Surrey, 25 miles from London, Woking was originally a village located at what is now known as Old Woking; the current town centre being open heathland. With the arrival of the Basingstoke Canal and then the railway in 1838, Woking suddenly became more accessible from London and, in the 1800's, the present town started to develop when London had a shortage of land. The links with London still echo today with many moving out of London to live in Woking with their families, offering them a greener lifestyle and being able to commute so easily back into the City Centre – a mere 23 minutes into Waterloo. Woking is one of the leading towns in the country adopting greener energy technologies with several combined heat and power stations throughout the borough.
With over 62,000 residents Woking town is the the focal point of the Borough, with major retail, employment, cultural and entertainment facilities. Having undergone extensive revamaping over the last two years, the train station and walkway, Wolsey Place shopping Centre and the Peacocks centre are due to have a £7.3 million facelift over the coming year.
Arts and leisure are well documented here in Woking with HG Wells using Horsell Common as the setting of his novel War of the Worlds, the Lightbox is an Arts and Heritage centre deisgned by Marks Barfield – artichects of the London Eye and of course there are areas of beauty such as Horsell Moor, the Basingstoke Canal and plenty of parks surrounding the town.
Woking is also home to Woking football club, Pyrford Cricket club - one of the oldest in Surrey and who can forget the most famous export Paul Weller who lived in Stanley Road!
